Saddam used WMD on 40 Kurdish towns from 1987-1988. The Kurds in Iraq became an easy and frequent target for Saddam to test the chemical agents Mustard Gas, Sarin, tabun, and VX.The most significant and destructive attack came on March 15-19, 1988; Saddam ordered a chemical gas attack on the Iraqi town of Halabja, killing and estimated 5,000-7,000 of his own countrymen, women and children. The attack on this Kurdish town is considered the largest chemical agent attack on a civilian population in modern times.
Needless to say this silenced his critics, and showed the world that Saddam was definitely capable of using WMD.
